About the artist

Joel Mesler

Joel Mesler, born 1974, is an American artist based in Sag Harbor, New York. In addition to working as an artist, Mesler works as an art dealer and gallery owner. After graduating from the San Francisco Art Institute, he opened his first gallery, Dianne Pruess, in Chinatown, Los Angeles. Since then, he has operated numerous galleries as he made his way to New York.  Rental Gallery is his most recent gallery venture, located in East Hampton, New York. Focusing more on his own art now, Mesler’s autobiographical paintings and drawings have a distinctive fluid style, juxtaposing language and image, and imbued with dead-pan humor and dry wit.  Born and raised in California, the bold leafy patterns of Mesler’s work recall the vernacular of Los Angeles and Southern California design. Mesler’s work has been exhibited at many galleries in the U.S. and Europe. His most recent exhibition was with David Kordansky Gallery in Los Angeles.
