About the artist

Wendimagegn Belete

Wendimagegn Belete, born 1986, is an Ethiopian multimedia artist working in video, painting, photography, text, and found materials. Central to Belete’s practice is his preoccupation with cultural heritage and identity, specifically Ethiopian narratives, identity, and history. Belete’s process involves stitching together found materials, such as newspaper articles, archival letters, recorded conversations and traditional Ethiopian ceremonial garments as artistic mediums to create vibrant and textural collages. His work is a deeply psychological exploration of time and memory, forming a visual ‘memory map’ for the audience to make sense of history, culture, and our place in the world as both community members and individuals. This successful young artist has had numerous solo and group exhibitions, and will be featured in the 2022 Venice Biennale as part of the 2021 Future Generation Art Prize selections. Belete lives and works between Oslo, Norway and Ethiopia.
